The latest AI model releases, multicloud networking shifts, and Microsoft's record-breaking Patch Tuesday.
🤖 AI Models
The frontier has shifted dramatically this week in what amounts to the largest launch wave since GPT-4. OpenAI released the GPT-5.6 family, comprising three tiers: Sol (flagship), Terra (mid-tier at half the cost of GPT-5.5), and Luna (fast tier). xAI shipped Grok 4.5 on 8 July, while Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 now tops public benchmarks. Moonshot AI also joined with Kimi K3 on 16 July. Notably, open-weight models like DeepSeek V4-Pro are within a fraction of a point of the closed leaders on coding benchmarks — narrowing the gap that once seemed insurmountable.
In a sign of how far the industry has moved beyond model development alone, OpenAI also launched DeployCo, a $4bn consulting arm. The labs now sell implementation, not just models — and enterprise demand shows no sign of slowing.
🌐 Cloud Networking
The cloud landscape is entering a genuinely multicloud era. AWS and Google Cloud announced a multicloud networking collaboration, with Azure expected to join later in 2026. This marks the first time the three hyperscalers are actively cooperating on infrastructure rather than competing head-on.
Google’s Cross-Cloud Lakehouse, built on Apache Iceberg, can now query data hosted in AWS without copying it — a powerful capability for organisations with split-cloud strategies. Google also expanded Gemini Enterprise specifically for AI agent governance, positioning it squarely against ChatGPT Work and Anthropic’s own enterprise offerings.
🔐 Security — action required
Microsoft’s largest Patch Tuesday ever addressed 622 vulnerabilities, including 59 rated critical. Notably, two are already under active exploitation: CVE-2026-56164 (SharePoint Server) and CVE-2026-56155 (ADFS), both rated Critical.
Elsewhere, CISA has warned of an exploited Adobe ColdFusion flaw (CVE-2026-48282), and the ShinyHunters threat group breached HR and payroll systems at 100+ organisations by targeting Oracle PeopleSoft.
Recommendation: Patch SharePoint and ADFS immediately this week if you haven’t already.
